How to Saddle Stitch
Share
The saddle stitch is a traditional hand-sewing technique that has been used for centuries to create durable and long-lasting leather goods. Unlike a machine stitch, which uses a single thread, the saddle stitch involves two needles and two threads, creating a double row of stitches that are not only visually appealing but also incredibly strong.
One of Maison Meridian's signature pieces that showcases the beauty and strength of the saddle stitch is the Tricia Clutch Wallet. Handcrafted with small-batch savoir faire, this elegant wallet is not only a functional accessory but also a work of art. Each stitch is carefully placed to ensure security and style.
It's best to start with punching holes along the seam to be secured using a diamond chisel and mallet.
Step 1: Prepare the Thread
Start by cutting a length of thread that is approximately five times the length needed for stitching. If you are stitching several pieces or thicker leather, cut a little bit more than five times. This extra length will ensure you have enough thread to complete the entire stitching line without running out.
Step 2: Thread the Needles
Thread two needles, one on each end of the thread you just cut. This will allow you to stitch from both ends, creating a strong and secure seam.
Step 3: Begin Stitching
Insert one needle into the first hole to be stitched. Pull the thread halfway through the hole using the needle. Then, insert the opposite needle into the adjacent stitching hole and pull it through.
Step 4: Create the Stitch
Insert one needle into the hole, in the opposite direction of the stitch just made. Pull both ends of the thread tight to secure the stitch. This will create a neat and even stitch along the leather.
Step 5: Repeat and Secure
Continue this process, alternating needles and creating stitches, until you reach the end of the stitching line. To secure the end of the thread, back stitch (stitch in reverse over the existing stitching line) several stitches. This will prevent the thread from unraveling over time.
Step 6: Finishing Touches
Once you have reached the end of the stitching line, it's time to finish off the thread. You can either burn the ends of the thread to hide them within the leather or knot them securely for a clean and professional look.
